This dance format, commonly known as Lamakatha (circle dance), is traditionally performed in the family or community gatherings during festivals such as Poya Day or Sinhala New Year. The music that accompanies this dance usually consists of either three instruments only, the tambourine, drums,and flute. The dancers move around the person who tells the story. However, cultural values and norms of a particular society may not remain constant over time and there is a tendency for some traditions to be lost on account of change in values and lifestyles. Lamakathas also suffered this fate as the number of Lamakatha artists decreased and opportunities for them performance became rare.
